SoNo This October: New Tables on Washington Street, the Nightfair, and the Bridge Work Around Them

Where does East Norwalk catch a Metro-North train this month? Through Sunday, October 18, the answer is South Norwalk or Westport. No trains will stop at East Norwalk in either direction while the WALK Bridge program has the station closed.

That one closure puts more of Norwalk onto a few blocks around SoNo station. Those same blocks hold the newest restaurants in the city, the Saturday-night overnight road closure closest to Washington Street, and on October 24 the year's biggest free street party. In October, knowing which day you're on these blocks counts for about as much as knowing which places are open.

Three weeks of SoNo station doing double duty

The City of Norwalk set the closure to start Saturday, September 26. Regular service returns Monday, October 19. Until then, the workarounds all lead to South Norwalk:

  • Bus: Norwalk Transit's Route 5 runs free on weekdays between East Norwalk and South Norwalk stations. Riders show their pass to board. The extra-service schedule for October 3 through 18 is posted as a Route 5 PDF from Norwalk Transit.
  • Madison Street: East Norwalk permit holders can park on Madison Street in SoNo during the closure. It's a short walk to the South Norwalk platform.
  • Overflow lots: 10 Rowan Street and 182 East Avenue take permit parkers, who then ride the #5 bus to South Norwalk. The East Norwalk lot on the outbound, New Haven-bound side stays open.
  • Questions: The Park Norwalk office is at 11 N. Water Street, 203-831-9063.

The city tells anyone using the overflow lots or Madison Street to allow extra travel time. Weekends add another layer. The WALK Bridge program has flagged big reductions to train service between Stamford and New Haven on select weekends while crews remove the high tower cables. Check the weekend schedule before planning a Saturday trip into the city or back from it.

The overnight closure one block from Washington Street

The bridge work stays mostly east of the river during the week. The program's schedule for the week of October 5 shifts East Avenue traffic to the west side of the road from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for drainage work on Gregory Boulevard and Cemetery Street. It also closes East Avenue at Fort Point Street from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., and closes Osborne Avenue under the railroad bridge Tuesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The weekend closure is the one that reaches the restaurant blocks. North Water Street is closed between Marshall Street and Washington Street from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Friday through Sunday, with a posted detour. That's dinner-and-after hours, on the waterfront side of the same corner where most SoNo evenings start. Work at the bridge itself runs 24 hours a day, Monday through Saturday.

The program says every one of these schedules can change for weather or other unforeseen conditions. The weekly bulletin and the WALK Bridge construction map show the current week's closures. Check them before a Friday or Saturday dinner reservation in SoNo, and again in the days before October 24.

What the newer tables on these blocks were built for

Several of SoNo's newest openings seem planned with cooler months and longer evenings in mind, which suits October.

Bar TerraMare, 122 Washington St. Chef Giuseppe Castellano, who owns Gallo Ristorante and Lantern Bar & Gastropub in Ridgefield, held a soft opening on August 1. The Hour reported that the menu is built around Italy's coastal regions: traditional salumi, artisan cheeses, house-cured seafood "salumi" billed as Connecticut's first seafood salumeria, and a dedicated crudo bar. In the opening release, Castellano said:

"South Norwalk has incredible energy and an appreciation for great food, so I wanted to create a restaurant unlike anything else in the area."

TerraMare's own site now carries a full menu and online reservations. Its posted aperitivo menu is served at the bar from 3 to 5:30 p.m. One section of the posted menu is still labeled "Summer 2026," so ask about the seasonal dishes before you set your heart on one.

The Haven, 14 N. Main St. The reworked rooftop came back this summer with a roof over the roof, heaters, and fire pits. CTBites reported that the setup is meant to stretch the season into colder, windier weather. The Haven's site says the rooftop is open and seats guests first come, first served. Reservations are only for the main-floor speakeasy. The café downstairs is listed as open daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The site gives no fall hours for the rooftop.

Norwalk Bagel Co., 133 Washington St. It opened on May 13 with sourdough bagels and breakfast and lunch service. It's the closest new breakfast to the South Norwalk platform for anyone rerouted there this month. Its homepage and its location page list different closing times, so check norwalkbagels.com for the day you plan to go.

The calendar, before and after the station reopens

Most of what's on in SoNo through mid-November sits within a few blocks of Washington Street. That puts it close to the station that's carrying East Norwalk's riders until the 19th.

October 24, hour by hour

The city's listing describes the Nightfair as a free, all-ages festival that takes over Washington Street. It lists international DJ and producer Wuki, local indie-pop band Similar Kind, the Sanderson Sisters roaming the street, pumpkin painting sponsored by Wegmans, trick-or-treating, carnival rides and games, a costume contest, food trucks, and more than 60 local makers, artists and vendors. Here's one way to spend the day, using only the posted times:

  1. 11 a.m. Start at the SoNo Collection pre-party. It has a trick-or-treat trail, a DJ and activities until 2 p.m.
  2. 2 p.m. Walk down to Washington Street when the Nightfair opens.
  3. 3 p.m. TerraMare's posted aperitivo hour starts at the bar, a few doors into the festival at 122 Washington St. Confirm Saturday service with the restaurant.
  4. Evening. Adults can head to the Blind Rhino beer tent beside the main stage. It's 21 and over, with beer, wine, hard cider, canned cocktails, picnic tables and cornhole. The covered rooftop at The Haven on North Main is first come, first served.
  5. 10 p.m. The festival closes. Before driving home, check that week's WALK Bridge bulletin for any Saturday-night closure on North Water Street.

East Norwalk after October 19

The work across the river runs past the station reopening. In September, the city told Patch that the East Norwalk project combines state drainage upgrades with new sidewalks, crosswalks and traffic calming, and that it was expected to finish by the end of the year. The city tied that work to the East Norwalk Connectivity Enhancement and WALK Bridge projects. Patch also reported that Dippin' Chicken at 236 East Ave. closed, with a sign that pointed to the construction outside. The owner is looking for a new location in Norwalk.

Once East Norwalk trains are back on Monday, October 19, the parking and Route 5 workarounds end. The year-end target for the new East Avenue sidewalks and crosswalks becomes the next date to watch. For questions about any of the bridge work, the WALK Bridge project team is at 1-833-462-9255 or [email protected].
